Pro Bono Cases

Through our Pro bono Scheme, we offer free legal services to persons who cannot afford legal representation in our community. In doing this, we have done some of our most fulfilling work by causing the establishment of much-needed jurisprudence that protects the rights of various disadvantaged groups particularly, women and the girl child in Nigeria.
Some of our Pro Bono cases include:

1. CATHOLIC ARCHDIOCESE OF LAGOS

We act as counsel to the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos. The Firm, in this capacity represents the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos in every suit instituted against it completely free of charge. We render legal advisory services in terms of preparation and review of various contracts, incorporation of non-governmental organisations, company secretarial and allied corporate/commercial law duties to selected Catholic agencies, representation at prosecutory and quasi-prosecutory proceedings, etc.

The Firm serves as external legal advisers to the Anthony Cardinal Okogie Foundation, Franciscan Sisters of Immaculate Conception, Jesus and Mary Foundation, Friends of Jesus Orphanage and Creche,Lekki Deanery Catholic Women Organisation Foundation, among others. The Firm has also advised the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos on issues of topical interest such as the National Code on Corporate Governance 2016, the Same Sex Prohibition Act 2014.

Our Senior Partner, Chief Anthony Idigbe SAN is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Anthony Cardinal Okogie Foundation and a Grand Patron of the National Association of Catholic Lawyers of the Lagos Archdiocese. Our Managing Partner, Mrs. Elizabeth Idigbe is Secretary of the Board of Trustees of Friends of Jesus Orphanage and Creche. Other members of the Firm have represented the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos in various lawsuits.

2. UKEJE V UKEJE

The Firm successfully fought from the court of first instance to the Court of Appeal to the Supreme Court and won at all levels, this locus classicus that reaffirmed the right of the girl child to inherit her father’s property. Premised on its victory at the Nigerian apex court, the Firm is enforcing the judgment and recovering part of the estate of the deceased for the wrongfully dispossessed daughter.

3. COMMISSIONER OF POLICE V RIDWAN ABAYOMI

In this suit, the defendant was an employee of the complainant company. He fell into the hands of dubious marketers who swindled him of the company’s stock of goods. We represented the defendant and negotiated an amicable settlement of the suit and got the imprisoned defendant released from custody.

4. UGWU V UGWU

The Firm currently acts as counsel to the widowed defendant in a suit instituted against her by her in-laws in which they seek to remove her from her matrimonial home because her husband died without any issue from the marriage. The Firm is challenging the inequitable provision of the Lagos State Administration of Estates Law which provides on the one hand that a bereaved husband may inherit the entirety of his deceased wife’s estate but a widow on the other hand is only entitled to a portion of her late husband’s estate.

We also partner with like-minded organisations to carry on cases, advocacy and training of relevant institutions on different practices, and policies that improve access to justice. One of such partnerships is our collaboration with AGA|AAP (Attorney General Alliance African Alliance Partnership) whom we represent in Nigeria and work with across several other African countries which is focused on strengthening the rule of law in Africa.
